Though they are not typically thought of as a stinky pet, there are ways you could be unknowingly causing your hamster to be smelly!
Reasons Why a Hamster May Smell:
- Inadequate Cleaning Habits – Cleaning is important if you don’t want your hamsters smelling. Hamsters need their cages to be thoroughly cleaned 2–3 times a week, while bedding should be changed out daily. Without proper cleaning, hamster cages and bedding can quickly become smelly.
- Overcrowding – As friendly as hamsters are, they can become territorial if there are too many in one cage. In such situations, urine and fecal matter can start to build up, causing a scent.
- Sebum – Sebaceous glands in hamsters secrete oils called sebum, which help keep their fur clean. In excess, though, sebum can build up and start to smell.

- Keep it Clean – As previously mentioned, one of the quickest ways to cause your hamster to become smelly is to not clean its cage regularly. Make cleaning out your hamster’s cage part of your weekly routine.
- Proper Nutrition and Exercise – Proper nutrition and ample exercise is key to keeping your hamster’s sebum levels under control and therefore keeping nasty smells away.
- Brushing – Regularly brushing your hamster’s coat with a soft-bristled toothbrush will help remove excess sebum and remove dander, further reducing odors.
