Are Hedgehogs Domesticated?

For centuries, pet-lovers everywhere have been captivated by hedgehogs as a unique and interesting pet. But are hedgehogs domesticated? The answer is, not quite yet.

Characteristics of Domestic Animals

Domestication is the process by which an animal has evolved with humans, so that it behaves and socializes with humans in a friendly and familiar way. Domestic animals have also developed physical characteristics that make them safe to keep at home, or as a pet.

These animals are usually non-aggressive, have physical characteristics that make them suitable for small spaces, and have adapted to being around people and other animals.

Hedgehogs Not Quite There Yet

Unfortuantely, hedgehogs haven’t fully developed those characteristics. While hedgehogs are certainly friendly and can be bred in captivity, they are omnivores and not used to living in small spaces. In captivity, they can become aggressive when they’re hungry or scared. And they need a variety of foods, which also makes it harder to domesticate them.

But Don’t Give Up On Them Yet!

Despite all of this, there are still ways to get hedgehogs to be comfortable around people. Here are some tips:

  • Provide lots of hiding spaces. Hedgehogs like to hide, so giving them options for hiding will help them feel more secure.
  • Provide a wide variety of food.giving them a variety of food options to choose from will keep them from getting bored and growling.
  • Handle with care. Be gentle and slow when handling your hedgehog. This will help them get used to people and let them know that they are safe.

There is still hope for domestication of hedgehogs, despite the challenges! Providing a safe and comfortable environment, and giving your hedgehog lots of TLC will go a long way in helping them adjust to regular contact with humans.
