Are Reptiles Herbivores?

Reptiles are a type of vertebrate animals and they are generally carnivorous, meaning they are meat eaters. But, some reptiles are indeed herbivores.

Types of Reptiles

The types of reptiles that consume vegetable matter depend on the species. Most turtles, for example, are herbivorous and feed on fruits, plant leaves and aquatic vegetation. Iguanas, bearded dragons and leopard geckos are also omnivorous or herbivorous, meaning they eat both meat and plants.

Carnivorous Reptiles

Most reptiles, however, are carnivorous. Some of the most common types include snakes, lizards and crocodiles, which mainly feed on small animals or insects.

Herbivorous Reptiles

The following list includes reptiles that are herbivores:

  • Tortoises – These terrestrial reptiles mainly eat vegetation, and they often exhibit plenty of fascination while they’re browsing plants and graze.
  • Green iguanas – Native to Central and South America, these reptiles mainly prefer leaves, such as endive, turnip greens and collard as well as fruits like melons, apples, and bananas.
  • Chameleons – These strange-looking creatures are actually omnivorous, meaning they eat both, animal proteins, and plants. In the wild, they mainly consume insects, but in captivity, they do feed on plants as well.
  • Uromastyx – These desert lizards are completely herbivorous, and they thrive on a diet of cacti, fruits and flowers.

Although most reptiles are carnivorous, some of them can survive on a vegetarian diet. Before you buy a pet reptile, it is important to research and find out what type of diet it requires, especially if you are looking for a herbivorous pet reptile.
Keep in mind that all reptiles need a balanced and suitable diet in order to be healthy and happy!
