Are there snakes in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica is known for being among some of the most diversely populated countries when it comes to animals, boasting more than 500,000 species. But what about snakes? Are there any in this Central American country?

The answer is yes! While Costa Rica may not be teeming with them, exotic snake species do call this tropical region home. Here’s a closer look at the snakes you can find in Costa Rica:

Rainforest Snakes

There are a variety of snakes that make their homes in the lush, tropical rainforest of Costa Rica. These include:

  • Caterpillar Snakes – These are one of the largest and most commonly seen snakes
  • Barbour’s Patch-nosed Snake – This rare species is often found among leaf litter
  • Eyelash Pit Vipers – These venomous snakes are characterized by the “eyelash” scales above their eyes
  • Bushmasters – These ominous creatures can grow up to 13 feet!

Marsh Snakes

In Costa Rica’s marshy habitats, a few species of snakes can be found. These include:

  • Terciopelo – A large, dangerous snake with distinct yellow bands
  • Rough-scaled Bush Viper – This small, secretive snake is hard to spot in marshes
  • Sykes’s Green Viper – Easily distinguished by its bright green coloring
  • Neotropical Grass Snakes – A large, non-venomous species found in wet environments

Even with the diversity of snakes in Costa Rica, encounters with them are actually pretty rare, and many of Costa Rica’s species are not particularly dangerous. So don’t let fears of snakes keep you from enjoying the stunning beauty of Costa Rica!
