Can Cats Die From Cold Weather?

Cats usually prefer warmer climates and shouldn’t be outside for long in cold weather, as they can suffer from hypothermia and frostbite, both of which can cause serious health problems. In extreme cold temperatures, cats can die from exposure.

Symptoms of Hypothermia in Cats

The following symptoms can indicate that a cat has been exposed to cold weather for too long and is suffering from hypothermia:

  • Shivering
  • Weakness and lethargy
  • Glazed eyes and dilated pupils
  • Pale or discolored gums
  • Depressed respiration
  • Dilated pupils
  • Slow heart rate
  • Limp, floppy body
  • Unconsciousness

Treating Hypothermia in Cats

Once your cat has started to show symptoms of hypothermia, it is important to get them to a warm place and seek medical attention immediately:

  • Wrap your cat in a warm towel.
  • Do not use hot water bottles or microwaved heating pads, as this could burn the cat’s skin.
  • Gently rub your cat’s body to encourage circulation.
  • Give your cat warm fluids such as milk or broth – not cold water, as this can shock their body.
  • Seek medical help immediately.

Preventing Hypothermia In Cats

The best way to keep your cat safe in cold weather is to keep them indoors. If you let your cat outside, make sure they are wearing a jacket or sweater and try to limit the amount of time they are outside. You should also ensure that your cat has access to a sheltered, warm space inside and some tasty treats so they are enticed to come in.

If you think your cat may have been exposed to the cold for too long, be alert to signs of hypothermia and seek medical attention as soon as possible. If treated quickly, a cat can usually be saved from the effects of hypothermia, but extreme cold temperatures can be fatal.
