Can You Use an HSA for Your Pet?

Many people are familiar with Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and how they are used as tax-advantaged accounts to help individuals offset medical costs. But did you know that HSAs can also be used to pay for pet care?

What Does an HSA Cover?

Under IRS guidelines, HSA funds can be used to pay for the following types of pet expenses:

  • Vaccinations and Wellness Visits – An HSA can be used to pay for vaccinations and regular checkups, helping you to keep your pet healthy.
  • Diagnostic Tests – If it looks like your pet might have a medical condition, tests may be necessary. An HSA can be used to cover some of the costs associated with these tests.
  • Prescription Medication – Prescription drugs can be expensive, especially when it comes to pet care. Fortunately, your HSA can cover some of the costs associated with these medications.
  • Surgeries and Procedures – If your pet needs a surgery or a medical procedure, you can use your HSA to help cover the costs.

What Does Not Qualify?

Unfortunately, not all pet expenses are eligible for reimbursement with an HSA. You cannot use HSA funds for the following:

  • Grooming – Grooming services such as dental care, bath and nail trimming, and coat clipping are not covered by an HSA.
  • Food and Treats – Food, treats, vitamins, and similar items are not eligible for reimbursement.
  • Insurance Premiums – Insurance premiums for pet health insurance are not eligible for reimbursement from an HSA.

Using an HSA to cover pet expenses can be a great way to help offset the costs of keeping your pet healthy and happy. Make sure that you check your plan to confirm which pet expenses are covered, and always keep your receipts for any qualified expenses.
