do bearded dragons eat during brumation

Brumation and Bearded Dragons Eating Habits

Brumation is a normal state for bearded dragons that resembles hibernation. Especially in the autumn and winter months, bearded dragons will become less active, with their appetites decreased or completely gone. With this process, the bearded dragon finds a safe, comfortable place to wait out the cold weather.

Do Bearded Dragons Eat During Brumation?

The answer is yes, bearded dragons may eat during brumation, but with decreased frequency. This can vary depending on the individual dragon and, again, typically is more likely in the spring and summer months. You may only see them eat around once every two weeks or even once a month.

When a bearded dragon does eat during brumation, it is usually softer fruits and vegetables. This makes sense, as a decrease in appetite and moving less often means that a bearded dragon needs to take in the most energy from their diet as possible. This does not mean that bearded dragons cannot eat any for of animal protein, but it is best to feed them easier-to-digest forms such as pinky mice or crickets.

Tips For Feeding Bearded Dragons During Brumation

Feeding bearded dragons during brumation requires patience and awareness. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Make Sure Your Dragon is Warm Enough: Brumation means that your bearded dragon will be spending more time in cooler temperatures (around 65°F/18°C). If your dragon is well insulated and warm enough to wake up enough to eat, they will be more likely to consume food. You can easily monitor the temperature in their enclosure with a thermometer.
  • Keep a Consistent Feeding Schedule: Even if a bearded dragon doesn’t eat every day, make sure to keep a consistent feeding schedule. This helps keep their metabolic processes regular. So if you usually feed your dragon once a week, stick to this schedule and offer them food every week.
  • Provide Soft Foods: At this time, switch to softer options such as fruits, vegetables, and bugs that are easier to digest. You can also offer calcium and vitamin-enriched food for bearded dragons.

Brumation can be a confusing and concerning time for bearded dragon owners, as it is normal for a dragon to eat less during this period. By understanding what to do and offering the right foods, you can help your dragon adjust and remain healthy during brumation.
