Do Bearded Dragons Need a Night Light?

Bearded dragons are popular reptiles, and their owners often want to provide the best possible environment for them. One question that often comes up is whether or not a bearded dragon needs a night light.

Why It May Be Necessary

Bearded dragons are diurnal, which means they are most active during the day and sleep at night. They need to be able to distinguish day from night in order to live a healthy lifestyle. Additionally, exposure to UVB lighting during the day helps them to produce Vitamin D3 which is essential for good health.

There are two main reasons why a bearded dragon may need a night light:

    • Temperature: A night light can provide a small amount of heat, which can be beneficial to maintain the ambient temperature in the cage. This may be especially important if the temperature drops at night.
    • Lighting: A small night light can provide a bit of light, which can help the beardie distinguish night from day. This can help maintain a healthy circadian rhythm.

What are the Best Types of Night Lights for Bearded Dragons?

The best type of light for a bearded dragon night light is a red or ceramic heat light. Red bulbs provide just enough light to allow the bearded dragon to comfortably differentiate night from day, but not enough to act as a full spectrum source of light. If a ceramic heat light is used, it should be on a thermostat to prevent it from getting too hot.

Do Bearded Dragons Need a Night Light?

Whether or not your bearded dragon needs a night light depends on the specific circumstances. If the temperature in the cage drops significantly at night, or if you’re having difficulty getting them to sleep, then a night light is probably a good idea. However, it’s always best to err on the side of caution and seek advice from a reptile specialist before installing any type of night light.
