Do Cats Have Thumbs?

Cats are adored by many, and are considered to be intelligent and adpatable creatures. But one thing a lot of people ask is whether cats have thumbs.

The short answer to this is: no, cats do not have thumbs. Cats are amazing for many reasons, but their anatomy doesn’t feature thumbs. This is why cats rely on their:

  • Sharp claws
  • Sharp teeth
  • Long whiskers

to aid in their mobility and catching of prey.

The Reason Cats Don’t Have Thumbs: Evolution

The absence of thumbs in cats is due to the fact they evolved in a different manner to other creatures, especially those that have thumbs, such as primates. In cats, their paw bones are much shorter than in primates, which are longer and able to move a certain way to allow the thumbs to be useful.

Cats often make up for this with their other features such as their claws and flexible joints that help them to grip onto things.

Do Cats Go Through Life Without Thumbs?

Cats without thumbs may not be as effective at certain tasks, however they are still very dexterous animals. They can open doors, pick up items and even type on the keyboard if trained! So, cats may not have thumbs, but they adapt by utilising their other body parts in creative ways.
