Do Geckos Need Water?
Geckos are a type of lizard found across the world and come in many species. But do these particular reptiles need water to survive?
General Hydration Requirements
Geckos, like many other reptiles, obtain most of their water from the food they eat. This means that providing a gecko with a diet of appropriately wet insects, such as mealworms or crickets, is often enough to keep them hydrated and healthy.
However, just like any other species, there are occasions where a gecko may require supplementary water. If your gecko experiences dehydration, (which is indicated by sunken eyes and slow reaction time) a shallow bowl of freshwater should be present in its enclosure.
Different Environments and Hydration Requirements
The hydration requirements of a gecko will largely depend on their environment. Hot and humid conditions typically equate to higher requirements for hydration.
In arid or dry habitats, geckos will usually receive the majority of their hydration from the bugs that they eat. This is because the bugs themselves would have obtained moisture to survive in the environment.
In more tropical, humid climates, it is likely that geckos will need additional water than they could get from their food. In this case, a shallow dish of clean drinking water should be provided.
Signs of Dehydration
Knowing the signs of dehydration can help you correctly gauge when a gecko needs more hydration. Some signs are:
- Sunken Eyes: This is particularly noticeable in geckos with light-coloured eyes.
- Decrease in Movement: An inactive gecko who doesn’t move for long periods may be sluggish from dehydration.
- Flaking Skin: A gecko’s skin may flake if it is not receiving adequate hydration.
- Decrease in Appetite: Without adequate levels of hydration, a gecko’s appetite might decrease.
Conclusion
Geckos typically don’t need much water as they obtain a lot of their hydration from the food they eat. However, if you have a gecko in an arid or humid climate, it is important to monitor the hydration levels and provide a shallow bowl of water when necessary. If a gecko appears dehydrated, take the appropriate steps to restore their hydration.
