Does Fish Have Blood?

Fish have an internal circulatory system which pumps a fluid called ‘blood’ around their bodies, just like mammals and other animals. However, the composition of fish blood is significantly different to that of a mammal and other vertebrates.

The Composition offish Blood

Fish blood is typically composed of:

  • 80-90% Water
  • Chloride, Sodium, Urea and Ammonia
  • Hemoglobins

Unlike mammals, fish do not have the same type of red blood cells. Instead, they have a less efficient hemogolobin for carrying vital oxygen around their body.

The Transport of Oxygen in Fish Blood

Due to the lack of red blood cells, fish must rely on their gills to transport oxygen into their lungs. This process is known as ‘diffusion’, where oxygen moves from places of high concentrations to places of lower concentrations.

The oxygen-rich water enters their gills and diffuses into their bloodstream. The oxygen is then transported through the circulation system, to help the fish power their muscles and metabolic processes.

In Conclusion..

So to answer the question, yes, fish have blood. It does not have the same composition as mammal blood, but it does play a role in the transportation of oxygen within the fish’s body.
