Do Leopard Geckos Eat Vegetables?

The diet of leopard geckos is one of the most important things to know when it comes to properly caring for them as pets. Many people may be particularly curious if leopard geckos eat vegetables or not.

What Do Leopard Geckos Typically Eat?

Leopard geckos are insectivores, so their diet primarily consists of very small live insects like crickets, dubia roaches, mealworms, superworms, and waxworms. It’s important to dust insect meals with a high-quality calcium/vitamin supplement powder to provide additional nutrients.

In the wild, leopard geckos may consume a few remains of fruit or vegetable matter that is in the same area of their insect prey, but it is not recommended to provide these as main sources of nutrition.

Do Leopard Geckos Eat Vegetables?

Leopard geckos are not typically interested in vegetable matter. Some leopard geckos may eat some vegetables now and then, but it should never make up more than 10% of their diet.

Vegetable Options for Leopard Geckos

If a leopard gecko is open to eating vegetables, they may be offered the following veggies pulverized into a small pieces:

    • Carrots

    • Collards

    • Mustard Greens

    • Turnip Greens

    • Sweet Potato

If a leopard gecko does not seem inclined to eating vegetables, there is no need to force them. They will do best with a balanced diet consisting of live insects.

As long as the insects are regularly dusted with a high-quality calcium/vitamin supplement and feed with variety, that should be enough for a leopard gecko’s nutrition.
