How Often Do Juvenile Leopard Geckos Shed?
Leopard geckos are low-maintenance lizards and make great first-time pet reptiles for novice keepers. Juvenile geckos have special shedding cycles that are somewhat different than adult geckos, as they are actively growing and developing. So how often do juvenile leopard geckos shed?
Juvenile Shedding Cycles
Juvenile leopard geckos shed every 2-3 weeks. As they age, this cycle will slow down to every 4-6 weeks. When a gecko sheds, they should eat the shed skin, as they are an important part of their diet and contain valuable proteins, vitamins and minerals. If the skin is not eaten, it should be removed before their next shed, as it can harden around the gecko’s toes and body, causing lesions.
Proper Environmental Conditions
It is important to provide a proper environment for your leopard gecko, to ensure a healthy shedding cycle. Keeping your gecko’s enclosure between 75-80 degrees Fahrenheit and with moderately humid conditions will promote a regular shedding cycle. Additionally, bathe your gecko regularly and provide a humid place to hide in their enclosure.
Common Shedding Issues
Hairline fractures or stuck shed can be caused by a few factors – nutritional deficiencies, dehydration, improper temperature and humidity, or a heavy shedding load. If you notice any of these problem shedding areas, they can generally be helped by providing a warm, moist environment and regularly bathing your gecko.
Signs of a Good Shed
If your juvenile leopard gecko is having a good, healthy shed, you should observe the following signs:
- No retained skin – The shed skin should come off in one full piece. There should be no signs of it sticking to the gecko once it is shed.
- Clean eyes – Eyes should be fully cleared of debris after a good shed.
- Healthy colors – Colors should be bright after a good shed and have a slight glossy sheen.
