How to Breed Guinea Pigs

Guinea pigs are cute and lovable animals, and you may want to consider breeding them to fill your home with more adorable fuzzy buddies. Breeding guinea pigs can be rewarding and can make for an enjoyable experience for people of all ages. Here’s how to get started:

Set Up

Start by setting up the environment for your guinea pigs. You’ll need:

  • Housing: Guinea pigs should have their own cage that’s at least seven square feet. Choose a large, sturdy cage with secure bars, and be sure to include hiding spots, decks, and ramps.
  • Bedding: Choose a bedding material that’s comfortable and safe. Avoid using cedar, scented, and corn cob bedding, as these can be dangerous for guinea pigs.
  • Food: Provide your guinea pigs with a balanced diet. Choose a guinea pig-specific food that’s high in fiber and low in fat.
  • Toys: Ensure your guinea pigs have enough toys to keep them entertained. Puzzle feeders are great for promoting foraging behaviors, as well as tunnels and bridges for running and climbing.

Choose Guinea Pigs

When choosing your guinea pigs, try to pick animals of the same age, as older animals may not reproduce as easily. When buying guinea pigs, examine the appearance and behavior of the animals to ensure they are in good health and have a good temperament.

Introductions

Once you have your guinea pigs, be sure to take it slow and give them time to get to know each other. Start by placing both cages side-by-side, allowing them to get accustomed to one another. Next, place their cages together and allow them to start interacting.

Mating and Pregnancy

Once your guinea pigs are comfortable with one another, it’s time for mating. Female guinea pigs reach reproductive maturity at 3 months old. Keep an eye out for breeding behavior, such as chasing and mounting, as this is a good indication that mating is ready to take place.

Once mating occurs, the female guinea pig will be pregnant for approximately 60-70 days. During this time, provide her with plenty of fresh hay, vegetables, and water.

Caring for Babies

Once the babies are born, you’ll need to ensure they are getting adequate nutrition and are kept warm. Provide them with fresh hay, vegetables, and other snacks. Be sure to also keep their nursing area clean and free from drafts.

Once your guinea pigs reach eight weeks old, they will be ready for adoption. Be sure to find good homes for your guinea pigs to ensure they are given plenty of love and care.

Good luck, and happy breeding!
