How to Stop Guinea Pigs From Fighting

It’s normal for guinea pigs to squabble, chase, and even “popcorn” around the cage. But when it turns violent and gets out of hand, it’s time to intervene and resolve the problem.

Certain behaviors, such as nipping and fur pulling, can be signs of aggression. But in some cases, it can simply be rivalry and dominance between two guinea pigs. Here are some tips to make sure that your guinea pigs stay friends:

Provide Enough Space

Guinea pigs can act out when they don’t have enough space. Provide the two of them with enough separate living spaces and hideaways. This will give them a place to retreat if they become overwhelmed by the presence of the other pig.

Enrichment

Make their home more interesting with toys, treats, and change up the scenery. Toys like tubes, platforms, and tunnels will provide entertainment, as well as mental stimulation. You can also give them treats like hay cubes and vegetables to give them an activity to focus on and enjoy.

Also, try moving the cage to a different spot every now and then to make the space more interesting for them.

Time Outs

If the fighting becomes serious and you need to intervene, separate them with a barrier like a large cardboard box. This will give them time to cool off and remove them from the stressful situation.

Vet Visit

If the fighting persists and you’ve tried the above steps, it’s best to take them in for a checkup. A vet can determine if there is an underlying medical issue, or behavior problem.

Dietary Needs

Finally, ensure that their diet is meeting their nutritional needs. A healthy diet can help improve their overall health, and lead to a better attitude towards each other.

Remember that fighting between guinea pigs is normal, but if it becomes severe, use these tips to help them get along.
