What do Pixie Frogs Eat?
Pixie frog (Pyxicephalus adspersus) is an aquatic frog species found in East Africa. They are known to be voracious eaters, but what do they actually eat?
In Captivity
In captivity, pixie frogs primarily eat:
- Insects – Pixie frogs enjoy crickets, mealworms, waxworms, wax paper moths, flies, and cockroaches.
- Carnivore pellets – A carnivore pellet diet should be supplemented with live prey.
- Fish – Frozen fish, like krill and plankton, can also be fed to these frogs.
- Fruits and Vegetables – Pixie frogs will also eat chopped fruits and vegetables, such as apples, oranges, and lettuce.
In The Wild
In the wild, pixie frogs have a versatile appetite that consists of:
- Insects – Beetles, dragonflies, grasshoppers, and flies.
- Smaller Frogs – In some cases, pixie frogs will also eat smaller frogs.
- Plant Material – Leaves, berries, flowers, and other plant material.
- Fish – Dead fish, usually washed up from nearby rivers.
It is important to note that these frogs are carnivorous, and their diet should consist primarily of insects, carnivore pellets, and frozen fish. Fruits and vegetables should be fed sparingly, as they do not provide enough nutrition for pixie frogs.
