what kind of lights do bearded dragons need

Bearded Dragon Lights

Bearded dragons are one of the most popular of all pet reptiles, with their docile nature and vibrant colors, and they require the right care and environment to thrive. Lighting is a crucial factor for a bearded dragon’s health, so it’s important to understand what type of lighting is best for them and what their enclosure should include.

Basking Lamp

Bearded dragons need both UVA and UVB light from a special type of lamp called a basking lamp. An ideal basking lamp is between 18 and 22 inches away from the top of the enclosure and should produce UVB light in the range of 10 to 12%. The bulbs used for a basking lamp also need to be replaced at least once every 6 months in order to provide the right amount of UVB light.

Night Bulb

A night bulb is not required, but it can help simulate a night/day cycle in the enclosure. A red or blue night bulb can be used and should be operated on a 12-hour cycle to help promote healthy behaviors. The night bulb should never provide bright light, as this can cause discomfort and disrupt the bearded dragon’s sleep cycle.

Other Types of Lighting

In addition to a basking lamp and night bulb, some bearded dragon owners opt for other lighting options in the enclosure. LED lights can be used to provide additional heat in the enclosure and some LED lights also provide beneficial UVB light, though the bulbs will need to be replaced more often (typically every 3 months). Natural sunlight can also be a great source of UVB light, so providing your bearded dragon with daily time outside with supervised exposure to the sun can be a beneficial part of its lighting requirements.

Things to Remember When Choosing Lights:

    • Choose the right type of basking lamp and replace it every 6 months. This is the most important light source for a bearded dragon and needs to produce the correct type and amount of UVB light.

    • Give your bearded dragon daily time outside under the sun. The natural light outdoors provides beneficial UVB light, so supervised outdoor playtime is a great way to include this in your bearded dragon’s life.

    • Consider additional lighting sources. LED lights, red and blue night bulbs, and natural sunlight can all be beneficial lighting sources for a bearded dragon’s enclosure.

By understanding what type of lighting is best for a bearded dragon’s health, you can ensure your pet has the best environment and care it needs to thrive. It’s important to keep in mind that the right type and amount of light will vary for each individual reptile and you should always consult a qualified reptile vet for any questions you have.
