What Temperature Can Guinea Pigs Be Outside?
As a guinea pig parent, it is important to keep your furry friend safe and comfortable in their outdoor hutch. One of the top considerations when it comes to their hutch is the temperature and climate. Here is a look at what temperature guinea pigs can handle when outdoors.
Optimal Temperature Range
- Spring & Autumn: The optimal temperature for guinea pigs outdoors is between 10 and 18 degrees Celsius (50 to 64 Fahrenheit). Ensure the temperature does not dip below 10 degrees Celsius.
- Summer: During summertime, the optimal temperature range is between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius (59 to 68 Fahrenheit). Ensure the temperature does not exceed guinea pigs’ comfort level.
- Winter: This can be the most dangerous time of year for guinea pigs. Extreme temperatures and weather conditions can be very uncomfortable and even dangerous. Make sure the temperature does not dip below 6 degrees Celsius (42 Fahrenheit).
Other Factors to Consider
The temperature alone should not be the only consideration when determining if your guinea pig is safe and comfortable outside. Other factors should be taken into account including:
- Is your hutch insulated?
- Is it in a sheltered spot away from extreme cold or hot drafts?
- Does the hutch have proper drainage and are there elevated surfaces for the guinea pig to stay off of the ground (to avoid chill from cold/wet patches on the floor).
- Are there plenty of hay and blankets inside the hutch to help the guinea pig retain their body heat?
Take Precautions
No matter the temperature, it is important to take precautions to ensure your guinea pig’s comfort and well-being. Make sure the hutch is in a sheltered spot, elevated off the ground, and keep hay and blankets available. Keep a frequent eye on your guinea pig’s comfort levels, and provide additional shelter or blankets as needed.
Finally, be sure to bring your guinea pigs inside when they are uncomfortable or during extreme temperatures. Keeping your guinea pig safe and comfortable should always be the top priority!
