Where Do Birds Live?

Birds are an incredibly vast group of animals that are found in almost every climate and corner of the world. Every species has its own unique habitat preferences and there is a great variety in where birds live.

Realms

  • Aquatic: Seabirds, waterfowl, and coastal birds all make the aquatic realm their home. They may live in estuaries, saltwater, fresh water, or any combination of these. They may also migrate seasonally.
  • Terrestrial: The terrestrial realm is the common place for land birds. They may inhabit vegetation such as rainforests, wetlands, deserts, grasslands, and more.

Habitats

Birds exist in a wide variety of habitats that allow them to thrive in both hot and cold climates.

  • Cavity and Nesting: Birds build nests and hollowed-out cavities (crevices) in trees, cliff sides, and other places. Here, some species lay eggs, raise their young, or sleep for the night.
  • Tree Canopy: In rainforest or temperate forests, birds spend most of their time in the tree canopy. The canopy offers protection from aerial predators and shelter from harsh weather.
  • Open Spaces: Open spaces include grasslands, tundra, and both cultivated and uncultivated fields. Many birds that live in these areas migrate in the winter season.
  • Urban: In cities, many birds make their home in parks, residential gardens, and other urban habitats. Often, these birds can be seen scavenging for food or nesting in man-made structures.

In conclusion, birds can be found in nearly every part of the world. Although many species migrate seasonally, they all return home to the same habitats where they make their nests, forage for food, and raise their young.
