Where Do Geckos Lay Their Eggs

Where Do Geckos Lay their Eggs?

Most gecko species are known for their clever climbing ability and nocturnal behavior, but geckos have other interesting traits, too. One fascinating thing about geckos is where they lay their eggs.

Where Are Gecko Egg Laying Sites?

Geckos lay their eggs in a variety of places around the world. Depending on the species, gecko eggs may be found in warm, humid climates or in arid or desert areas. Additionally, some species of gecko lay their eggs in a wide range of habitats, including trees, shrubs, under rocks or bark, even in animal burrows or human homes.

Egg Laying Behavior

In most cases, a female gecko will lay two or three eggs at a time. Some gecko species will lay an additional number of eggs in a clutch. On average, a female gecko will lay up to six eggs in a single year. The eggs are usually white in color and are the size of large jelly beans.

Most geckos bury their eggs in the ground or in other hidden areas for protection, but some species will lay their eggs in a protected spot near the family burrow or on a branch. The female usually guards her eggs, but some species may leave the eggs to fend for themselves.

How Long does it Take for Eggs to Hatch?

Gecko eggs typically take four to eight weeks to hatch, depending on the species and the environment. When the eggs hatch, a tiny version of the adult gecko emerges, although it takes several years for the animal to reach maturity where they can reproduce.

Gecko Caring Tips

Caring for a pet gecko requires special attention to the animal’s diet, enclosure, and environment. Here are some tips to help you take care of your gecko:
