Where to See Turtles in Oahu
Oahu is one of the Hawaiian Islands and is a beautiful destination for a family, couple or solo adventure. Oahu is known for its stunning beaches and is home to six species of sea turtles. If you’re looking for an up close and personal view of turtles in their natural habitats, here are some great places to visit:
Hanauma Bay
Hanauma Bay is located on the southeast side of Oahu and is known to be one of the best snorkeling spots in Hawaii. The bay is teeming with marine life and is a popular turtle hangout due to its calm, shallow water and abundance of food.
Waikiki Beach
Due to its large size and proximity to the ocean, Waikiki Beach is a great place to spot turtles. Turtles can often be seen basking on the golden sand near the shore, and they also sometimes travel pleasure craft close to the shore.
Ka’ena Point
Ka’ena Point is located on the north-west side of Oahu and is a great spot to spot turtles. As the point juts out into the ocean, there is a high chance of spotting turtles on the reef or in the deeper waters.
Kailua Beach Park
Located in the Windward Coast, Kailua Beach Park is a great place to spot sea turtles in their natural habitats. The beach park offers stunning views of the mountains and an excellent chance to catch a glimpse of a giant turtle or two.
Laniakea Beach
Located on the North Shore, Laniakea Beach is an iconic destination for surfers and beachgoers. This beach is well-known for its sea turtle population, so keep an eye out for giant sea turtles making their way through the rolling waves.
Makua Beach
Makua Beach is located on the east side of Oahu and is a great spot for turtle watching. The shallow waters and abundance of seaweed and algae make this area a favorite spot for sea turtles.
Here are some tips to remember when turtle watching:
- Do not disturb the turtles. Never touch the turtles or try to feed them.
- Stay quiet. Turtles can be easily spooked by loud noises, so keep conversation at a minimum and stay still.
- Be careful when swimming. Make sure to stay away from the areas where the turtles are resting, as they can easily be frightened.
