Why Are Hamsters So Violent?

Hamsters, though often thought of as cute, friendly pets, are actually surprisingly aggressive. There are several reasons why hamsters can appear to be violent.

Genetics

Hamsters are born with an innate predisposition for aggression. This natural aggression is often demonstrated as territorial sparring, with hamsters threatening and occasionally battling each other in attempts to dominate cages and establish territory.

Hormones

Hamsters’ hormones can also affect their behavior, namely males attempting to establish dominance and attract female mates. Younger hamsters are more driven to exhibit this behavior, while older females, who are already pregnant, may be calmer.

Stress

Changes in the hamster’s environment or routine can trigger stress, which can manifest as aggression. This means that when introducing new hamsters, objects or elements to a cage, it is important to do it slowly and with caution.

Over-Handling

Hamsters may become aggressively territorial of their owners if handled too much. It is important to handle them in a way that is comfortable to the hamster and to let them set the pace for the interaction.

Take note that, though hamsters can be aggressive, their behavior can be changed with proper environment and interaction. Establishing a safe and comfortable space for the hamster, as well as handling with care, will go a long way in making them friendly little pets.

Tips for Curbing Hamster Aggression:

  • Provide a spacious cage for hamsters to explore and make their territory
  • Introduce new elements to the cage (hamsters, objects, etc.) gradually
  • Handle the hamster with care on their own terms
  • Avoid overcrowding the cage and upsetting their environment
  • Incorporate playtime activities such as wheel-running and out of cage adventures
