Why Do Bearded Dragons Brumate?

Bearded dragons are a species of reptile, otherwise known as Pogona Vitticeps, that are native to the arid deserts of Northern and Central Australia. Every year, these lizards naturally enter a state of brumation, a phenomena that is similar to hibernation that some animals participate in during the colder seasons.

What is Brumation?

Brumation is a natural process that helps reptiles like bearded dragons to survive tough environmental conditions. In this phase, reptiles cease many of their normal activities, including eating and moving around, and instead spend a lot of time in a state of deep sleep. During brumation, a reptile’s metabolic processes slow down significantly, and they become dormant to conserve energy.

Why Do Bearded Dragons Brumate?

Bearded dragons are native to deserts, where temperatures can drop significantly during the winter. Since they live in areas with a very low food supply, brumation helps them to survive by reducing the amount of energy they use, as well as temporarily ceasing their need for food.

Brumation also serves an evolutionary purpose for bearded dragons. For example, since bearded dragons breed in the winter, brumation helps them to stay in a state of increased fertility during this period. Brumation also helps to create a healthier reproductive environment for female bearded dragons, as eggs are better developed in a cooler climate.

Signs That Your Bearded Dragon May be Brumating

If you own a bearded dragon, there are a few signs that can indicate that your pet may be entering brumation. These include:

  • Decreased Appetite: Bearded dragons will stop eating altogether during brumation, so if your pet’s appetite has suddenly decreased and they no longer seem interested in food, they may be entering this phase.
  • Lethargy: Bearded dragons that are entering brumation may become lazier and less energetic, spending more and more time sleeping, lying still, and basking during the daytime.
  • Hiding: Bearded dragons may also seek out dark spots to hide in when brumating, usually in corners or under decorations.

Having knowledge about brumation in bearded dragons can help you to better understand and care for your pet. Brumation is a natural process and does not need to be disrupted–just make sure that your bearded dragon stays hydrated during this time!
