why do dogs cry in their sleep

An Explanation as to Why Your Dog May Be Crying in Its Sleep

Dogs whimpering and whining during their sleep may be distressing for a pet-owner. But why exactly is your pup crying from such a deep sleep?

1. Reliving a Dream

Just like humans, dogs can dream while they sleep. What is seen in their dream may contribute to them whimpering or whining, just like some of us do in our sleep.

2. Neurological Activity

When dogs are in deep REM sleep, some irregular patterns of neurons will fire and that is why sometimes dogs make subtle sounds while they are in a deep sleep.

3. Comfort

Sometimes, dogs may cry out in their sleep for comfort when they sense danger. This can be a result of the puppy being taken away from its mother too early, leaving it with the feeling of insecurity.

4. Separation Anxiety

Separation anxiety can also contribute to your dog making noises in their sleep. They may sense your presence, even when you left the room, and make sounds out of anticipation for you to come back.

What You Can Do

  • Provide Security: Make sure your dog feels secure when you’re away by providing their favorite blanket or something that smells of you. Move their bed to a corner that’s away from drafts or things that may scare them.
  • Exercise: Make sure your pup is getting enough exercise. This will help tire them out, so they can drift off into a peaceful sleep.
  • Listen Closely: If it sounds like your dog is whimpering or crying out of fear, then enter their area and reassure them. If it’s consistently happening, consider speaking to your Veterinarian.

While it’s normal for dogs to make noises in their sleep, if you notice that it’s consistently happening, then you may want to speak to your Veterinarian for more guidance.
