Why is My Dog’s Nose Cold?
A cool nose on a warm and fuzzy pup is something that usually gets a question or two. Having a cold nose does not necessarily mean your dog is sick, but there are some reasons why their nose may be cooler than usual.
Paw Sweat
Dogs do not sweat through their skin, but noses and paws are a great way for them to release some of their body heat. Warm paws and cool nose can sometimes be the result of your pup trying to keep cool.
Climate Control
Equally as likely, the temperature of your pup’s nose may be dictated by her climate. Hot days can cause cool noses while freezing temperatures may make a small puppy’s nose feel cold.
Health Related
A cold nose could be a sign of an underactive thyroid, an infection, or other health-related issues. However, a single symptom isn’t likely to be a definitive indicator of an illness. It’s best to keep an eye on your pup’s well being and visit the vet if you are concerned.
Check Your Dog’s Nose Temperature
To check the temperature of your pup’s nose, take a dry cloth and gently rub a small spot on your pup’s nose. Make sure their nose is dry and only rub for a couple of seconds. If the cloth doesn’t immediatly warm up, you’re good to go!
Signs of a Healthy Dog Nose:
- Warm to the touch: A healthy pup should have a slightly cooling nose that is very warm to the touch.
- Moist: Dog noses should be moist but not wet, avoid extreme dryness as this can be a sign of illness.
- Smell: Dogs should have a slight smell to their noses, it should not be overpowering.
